Pathway Out of Poverty to Opportunity: Investing in Our Children Well-Being and Our Nation’s Future
Rayburn House Office Building Foyer
Tuesday, February 23, 2010, 4:00-7:30 pm

As we move from recession to recovery and the President’s proposed budgetary spending freezes and extension of Emergency Contingency Fund (ECF) is uncertain, policymakers must intentionally decide how to address the needs of American families living at/below the poverty line, of which Black families constitute a disproportionate share. Please join us as we: 1) assess the efficacy of DOL, DOE, HHS and DOJ human service programs in current economic state; and 2) examine ways how the cooperation and coordination of select federal programs (initiatives) can better serve low-income parents to ensure our children’s well-being and our nation’s future.

Invited Guests Include:
  • Deputy Assistant Secretary Gerri Fiala, Employment and Training Administration, U.S. DOL
  • Vickie Turetsky, Commissioner, Child Support Enforcement, U.S. DHHS
  • Gary Dennis, Senior Policy Advisor for Corrections, Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. DOJ
  • Kay Brown, Director, Education, Workforce and Income Security Issues U. S. GAO
  • Gene Falk, Senior Domestic Policy Analyst, Social Policy Division, Congressional Research Services (CRS)
  • Dr. Wilhelmina A. Leigh, Senior Research Associate, Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies
  • Paula Dressel, Vice President of JustPartners, Inc., Consultant with the Annie E. Casey Foundation
  • Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of National Urban League
  • Diane Williams, President and CEO of Safer Foundation
  • Gary Ivory, National Director of Program Development for Youth Advocate Programs, Inc.

Refreshments served and seating is limited. RSVP is required to receive copies of embargoed GAO and CRS investigative reports and CD weighing outcomes of DOL, HHS, DOJ and DOE policies (practices) and the progress we can make as a nation with interagency programs and initiatives that meet the holistic needs of poor, low-income Americans struggling to make ends meet.
