New Program for Young Ex-Offenders Coming to Jersey City

7/6/10 Jersey City Independent—The nonprofit YouthBuild Newark announced last week that it will funnel federal funds through to the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark to replicate its youth ex-offender program in Jersey City. The organization, which has found success in Newark, is also passing a total of $3.6 million in grants through to Catholic Charities and three other organizations in Atlantic City, Elizabeth and Passaic.

The program, aimed at juvenile ex-offenders between 16 and 21 years old, focuses on education, job training, youth development, leadership training and community revitalization efforts. Students are taught construction skills that are often applied on-site at affordable housing developments. Graduates of the program in Newark have an 85 percent placement rate in higher education or employment, according to the organization.
