When offenders leave jail, they need help starting over
8/9/10 Post-Bulletin—"Last year the Minnesota Department of Corrections released 7,994 offenders from state prisons. Each month approximately 300 people are released from the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center (ADC). Those are scary numbers, because the statistics tell us the vast majority of convicted criminals are not willing or able to change their ways and thus will return to crime, be arrested, and once again incarcerated. The recidivism rate in Olmsted County alone is 47 percent in a five-year period. In other words, almost half of the people who are arrested and brought to the ADC will be released and arrested again within five years. The impact on the crime victims, and the cost to all of us who must fund and support the legal system, is phenomenal."- Available online
