Pulling Levers: Getting Deterrence Right
Can we make deterrence work? Criminal
justice agencies have always tried,
but the results—whether of preventive
patrol or the death penalty—have always
been dubious. The three vignettes
on Boston, Lowell, and Minneapolis
highlight a new approach to crafting
deterrence strategies, and in the larger
tales that lie behind them there is reason
to be optimistic.
